Digital Autumn: Sensations
XR educational course
In September - October 2022, Less Media Group organized the first XR educational course for digital artists from Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
This was a non-for-profit initiative launched for the artists in the region affected by war. Many artists had to relocate, change their country. One of the purposes of the project was to inspire digital artists to work on their first narrative XR project and to introduce them to the tools and to the platforms that exist.

for the artists in the region affected by war. Many artists had to relocate, change their country.

One of the purposes of the project was to inspire digital artists to work on their first narrative XR project and to introduce them to the tools and to the platforms that exist.
Out of 80 applications that were received during the open call, the team of experts selected 20 students from 9 countries who took part in a 10-day intense program. During this program, there were daily lectures in Zoom and daily explorations in virtual reality.

Artists were introduced to the main creation tools - from Blender and Unity to Gravity Sketch, Shapes XR and Open Brush that allow them to create content within VR environment.
One of the main focuses of the course was on social VR platforms. From ENGAGE XR to VRChat, RecRoom, Altspace and event Roblox - students had group tours to all of those platforms and explored some of the best narrative VR worlds, sometimes on exclusive tours with the creators of the worlds. Students were also introduced to the concept of the immersive theatre performance and were introduced to award-winning performance of Ferryman Collective Welcome to Respite.

The feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive. The course allowed them to explore a very practical side of the metaverse and to understand the process of narrative content creation from ideation and pitching stage to fundraising and distribution challenges.
During the course, students were asked to develop one idea for a narrative XR project. 7 ideas were selected for a virtual pitch session that took place on ENGAGE XR platform. Students of the course had an opportunity to present their 5-minute pitch presentation in front of the international audience of VR industry experts - all present remotely in virtual reality.
One of the projects developed as a result of the course, Library of Dreams by Jane Rzheznikova, was selected to be part of the Innovation Studio selection at international documentary festival Sunny Side of the Doc in La Rochelle, France in June 2023.
Further on, in 2023, the project was selected to be part of two European Creators’ Labs in Luxembourg and Leipzig which gave project team an opportunity to work with industry’s leading experts on shaping the narrative structure and prototyping the work.

In January 2024, Library of Dreams was selected to be part of the prestigious Venice College Biennale among 12 international projects. As a result of this program, Library of Dreams also participated in the Venice Production Bridge to secure production funding and move forward with European co-production partnership.

In April 2024, Library of Dreams was selected to be part of the Market section of the New Images festival in Paris. The development of the project is continuing.
We put together this program having a big ambition in mind - to bring more talented creators from the region affected by war to the immersive space and inspire them to start their first VR project.

Sometimes we forget how hard it can be to start in a new industry. We wanted to give a very practical overview of the creative XR industry, and we succeeded.

The vast majority of students were blown away by the possibilities that virtual spaces and virtual tools offer, and the most rewarding thing is to actually see projects being developed as a result of the course.
We hope to scale this initiative to build an ecosystem for narrative XR content in the region, from idea development to production to distribution and international partnerships.

What is even more important is that we can do all of it without crossing any borders, all being in one virtual space where divisions and borders do not apply, and this is the most important thing.
